Ekin, a gifted painter from Tosa in the closing days of the Tokugawa Shogunate

An exhibition introducing the Tosa artist nicknamed Ekin, a man of exceptional talent to reveal the lure of his works which have survived on folding screens and paper lanterns from the samurai period

Folding screens with his paintings distinctively different from any other painter’s of the same age are shown still today at shrines and other sacred places in Kochi (formerly Tosa) during summer festival days. Grotesque expressions depicting scenes from horror stories in particular are said to be unforgettably impressive when they are seen under the dim candle light in the darkness.
