Wadaiko, traditional Japanese drum

Do you remember the powerful taiko in the popular anime Demon Slayer? The booming sounds, thrilling rhythms, and sheer coolness of taiko have wowed fans all around the world. In Japanese history, taiko first appears in written records from about 1,500 years ago as a communication tool, later appearing in shrine and temple rituals, performing arts, and martial arts.

Today, you can see taiko at summer festivals in Japan, and professional performers tour across the country and around the world, spreading the art of taiko globally. Feeling the dynamic movements paired with soul-stirring beats in person is absolutely electrifying—it gives you goosebumps!

I can’t wait to finally pick up the drumsticks and play the taiko myself!

Near Kaiyukan Aquarium in Osaka’s Bay Area

Minutes from Osakako Station (Osaka Metro Chuo Line)

TEMPO HARBOR THEATER, housed in the Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan, is in Osaka’s Tempozan area, just a 5-minute walk from Osakako Station on the Osaka Metro Chuo Line. I met up with my friends Tam from Vietnam and Huizhen from China at the station’s West Gate, and together we headed to “WA”DAIKO RHYTHM QUEST.

The streets smelled of the sea, and along the way, the Kaiyukan Aquarium and the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel stood right before our eyes. Being right on the waterfront, Tempozan is a popular spot with great scenery. The refreshing sea breeze made me even more excited to be there!

Pre-Stage Taiko Workshop

hoosing the costume for “WA”DAIKO RHYTHM QUEST

First, we got to choose our costumes. Just browsing through the colorful kimonos was so much fun!
I picked out a soft yellow kimono for myself♪ The experience felt even more real when I picked up the bachi drumsticks.

Drum Practice at ”WA”DAIKO RHYTHM QUEST

We started by watching the instructors’ impressive performance. The force of the taiko drums hit straight to our hearts—it was amazing! I felt a rush of anticipation and nervous energy.

Then the lesson began.
We became the main characters in a story where we had lost our memory, diving into special training for our first stage—determined not to mess up. I was already feeling a bit nervous.

The practice felt like a game, divided into quests. For each quest, we learned a new drum technique to conquer the challenge. The instructors used simple, energetic English, so the language barrier wasn’t a problem. Step by step, we practiced the movements, and as we worked together, we quickly picked up the techniques.
